Terry Tucker | Never Let Your Dream Die

While there have been many who land at one job or career path and stay there until retirement age, there are quite a few who jump into different positions for a certain amount of time before trying something else. Motivational speaker Terry Tucker’s resume is filled with different fields, whether it’s working as a NCAA Division I basketball player at The Citadel, working in hospital administration, or as a hostage negotiator.

“If you look at my resume, it looks like a super ball went off in a room.”

At the age of 37, Terry Tucker became a rookie police officer for the City of Cincinnati. But if one were to look at his resume prior to that, Tucker jumped around – dipping his toe into multiple positions. His initial dream was law enforcement, but his father prohibited that dream from becoming a reality – due to Tucker’s grandfather having been in law enforcement and getting injured on the job.

Working as a hospital administrator at the time, Tucker knew he was meant for more, and that law enforcement was the dream he wanted to pursue. But, as Tucker said himself, it wasn’t until after his father had passed before he took the next step in pursuing his dream. Despite being against his father’s wishes, Tucker knew it was a way for him to honor his grandfather’s legacy.

“My father was my hero, and I know he did what he did, not because he was trying to hurt me in any way, but because he loved me. He wanted what he felt was something better [than] a job where you’re working nights and getting shot at and all that kind of stuff; I get that. One of the things I’m most proud of in my life is I never let that dream die; I never let that purpose die.”

Tucker later retired from the police force and took up another position as a hospital administrator before eventually landing his current role as a motivational speaker. His website, Motivational Check, is where you can go to find his daily thoughts and his concept of The 4 Truths to encourage the people to whom he speaks.
